Scoping Study on Australian Engagement in Energy & Climate Change sectors in Viet Nam
Building on the renewable energy successes of 2019/20, scaling up Viet Nam’s transition will require strategic policy and market interventions to reshape its fossil-fuel-based economy. As a global leader in sustainable energy, Australia’s long-standing partnership with Viet Nam presents an opportunity to share expertise in this transition.

Strategic policy and market interventions are crucial for restructuring the macroeconomic patterns of Viet Nam's fossil-fuel-reliant economy. In that context, Australia, as a world-leader in the sustainable energy transition and a long-time bilateral partner of Viet Nam, offers an opportunity to leverage its experience to support Viet Nam on this progress.
We supported DFAT in Viet Nam to design an energy support program to the Vietnamese Government that leverages Australian’s world leading expertise in the renewable energy transition to strengthen transition of the Vietnamese power sector towards decarbonisation and green growth.
The program was designed into 4 main workflows:
1. Need Assessment for the power sector of Viet Nam and the institutions that manage it;
2. Gap analysis of the scope and efficacy of Development Partner support to Viet Nam’s power sector;
3. An assessment of Australia’s power sector and its comparative advantage;
4. Deliberative options assessment & selection process.
