Ayeyarwady State of the Basin Assessment (SOBA)

SOBA was the most comprehensive integrated environmental and social baseline assessment of the Ayeyarwady River Basin undertaken. The project’s objective is to empower good water governance through the development of institutional capacity and tools to improve decision-making in the context of integrated water management in the Ayeyarwady Basin. The project is led by the National Water Resources Committee (NWRC), with the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) as the focal ministry, and the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems (DWIR) as the implementing agency. It was a USD 2 million integrated assessment over 2 years and included inputs from more than 25 NGOs, universities, research centres and companies funded by the Australian Government in collaboration with the World Bank.

AMPERES led the design and delivery of the entire SOBA initiative, providing oversight for all thematic technical studies, distilling key insights from the thematic report into a final report and leading consultations with national and subnational stakeholders.

SOBA was utilised as the baseline information for the Ayeyarwady River Basin Master Plan.
